Next on our tour of fantastic new music, we have singer/songwriter Louisa Rose Allen, or better known as ‘Foxes’. She’s just starting to get her feet off the ground, but there’s a good chance you may have already heard from her. Foxes provides vocals in Clarity by electro-dance producer Zedd, which has reached the Billboard Hot 100 (and received moderate airplay) and peaked at #1 on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Songs chart.

She has yet to release a full-length album but still manages to deliver a few gems online which are gaining much attention. A few of her songs are on iTunes, so grab those if you like what you hear. I believe iTunes even named her one of 2013′s artists to watch for? Or maybe I made that up?

Here’s her latest track which has gotten a sort of informal release via a youtube video her friend created for the track. Pop music blogs are praising the song, noting that it is reminiscent of Marina & The Diamonds (I definitely hear it in the ‘oh-oh’ background vocals), Florence Welch, and Kate Bush.

Youth

I had first heard Youth in early 2012, saving much of its playtime for summer nights while driving with the moonroof open and windows down. The song skips any sort of intro and jumps right into the first verse, which happens to be my absolute favorite part. At first I regretted not choosing that bit for the snippet, however the second verse features a nice beat which you’ll surely enjoy and so I’m leaving it as is.

Clarity

As in most cases where artists are featured on songs by other people, Clarity is quite different from Foxes’ usual sound. Zedd (who is set to produce a nice chunk of Lady Gaga’s upcoming album) has crafted a radio-friendly club song with verses tailored to fit Foxes’ voice perfectly and a sing-a-long chorus.

Heartthrob

Let me just take a moment to state this fact: as of right now, Saturday, March 23, 2013, Heartthrob is the best album of the year. It’s 80s, it’s rock, it’s electronic, it’s indie, it’s pop. It’s (mostly) produced by Greg Kurstin and it’s perfect.

I know we’ve got plenty of time for other musical geniuses to pump records out but Tegan and Sara have set such an incredibly high benchmark that it’s unlikely anything will compare. (Or imagine this: perhaps everyone realizes what’s expected and we are blessed with a dozen amazingly perfect albums. I doubt it.)

Please note: I am not some crazed veteran Tegan and Sara fan. In fact, I practically despised the duo until this moment.

Now, onto the songs. I love just about this entire dang album, with the exception of maybe one song. I won’t tell you what that song is, but I will tell you that these are my four favorites. I’ve also provided you with 30-second snippets of my favorite bits for your listening pleasure.

I’m Not Your Hero

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Why it’s perfect: The production is by far the most solid. There’s a really great mixture of bass, synth, haunting 80s howling guitars, background vocals, and drums. Also, a few spots have this little “game boy”-ish beeping sound. Those moments are gold. In the snippet you get the very end of the middle-eight, said “game boy” beep, and the beginning of the final chorus (which features the chilling guitar howls).

Favorite lyric: “Sometimes it feels like I’m all that they’ve got, it’s so hard to know I’m not what they want”. Ain’t that the truth.

I Couldn’t Be Your Friend

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Why it’s perfect: It sounds like a Dragonette song. It’s hard to get that from the snippet I’ve posted, but if you listen to the entire song (mainly the intro and first verse) you will get it. It’s a little unbelievable how much they sound like Martina in this song, also. Damn Canadians. The snippet features the end of the final chorus followed by the flawless outro. Close your eyes and enjoy the pitched “oh-oh-oh-oh” and guitar finale. Amazing.

Favorite lyric: “Now you wanna say I was a criminal, stole you away, that sounds so fictional.”

I Was A Fool

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Why it’s perfect: Because. Because there’s nothing not perfect about it. There’s an perfect piano hook, a perfect beat, a perfect chorus. Need I go on? While the entire album has a very 80s sound to it, I think it’s most obvious (and well showcased) hereWhat’s in the snippet: An amazing echoed bridge followed by a bit of the final chorus. You can hear that famous Greg Kurstin howling guitar in here song also.

Favorite lyric: “But stand still is all we did, love like ours is never fixed.”

Closer

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Why it’s perfect: It’s the most radio-friendly song Tegan andSara song to date. It’s also the best song to catch the attention of anyone who wasn’t previously a T&S fan (myself). Probably the reason it was the lead single for Heartthrob. Also, there is a fantastic level of synths. Beep boop. Once again in the snippet, we’ve got some of the final chorus and subsequent outro.

Favorite lyric: “Here comes the rush before we touch … Here comes the spark before the dark.”

There you have it. Four amazing songs from one amazing album. There is nothing more to say, other than go buy it. Now. Seriously, right now.

Overall Score: 9/10

Natalia Kills

Love this bitch. ‘Nuff said.

Some people call her the next Lady Gaga. Some call her a Lady Gaga ripoff. Some say she’s a little too late, doing what Rihanna did two years ago. I call her perfect and say she’s right on track. She must think the same of herself, seeing as how her debut album (due out sometime in 2011) is set to be titled Perfectionist.

She is dark, scary, sexy and melodic. Take a quick listen:

MirrorsTurnin the lights out, burnin the candles, and the mirrors gonna fog tonight. - The lead single and most radio-friendly track in my opinion (so far). Seriously one of the catchiest pop songs I’ve heard in a while. The melody is just plain old perfect.

Love Is A Suicide - Who am I? Am I the epitome of everything you hate and you desire? You love me like an enemy. – Rumored to be the second single, this sweet little track was produced by Fernando Garribay. You know, the mastermind behind Lady Gaga’s Dance In The Dark. The sound is very similar, but a little darker of course.

Wonderland - I want the love, the money and the happy ending. You want the same as I, so stop pretending. – I can’t even compare this to anything else. It sounds like no other song I know. The production is fantastic and sort of bizarre sounding. There has been some talk of this being a possible second single (instead of Love Is A Suicide) due to it’s highly positive feedback.

Keep an eye out for this diva. Or, maybe I should say ear. Not to brag, but I call the jams and have a great track record, so hopefully there will be some ‘I told you so’s.

If I were to award artist of the year, there would be no argument. It would go, hands-down, to Robyn. From releasing 3 albums in half a year to putting on one of the best live shows I’ve ever seen, this girl delivers and is consistently impressing me more each time.

‘Indestructible’ will be her third single this year, following ‘Hang With Me’ and ‘Dancing On My Own’. It’s a pulsating dancefloor ballad, which also comes in acoustic flavor  as posted below.

If you’re going to be late to jumping on someone’s bandwagon this year, make it Robyn’s. It’s better late than never, and you’ll never look back.

I think a more accurate title for this entry would’ve been, “I Heart Coco”.

I’m not a human if you say I’m not, I’m not a human if my engines lock. And this motor that you call my heart, is another machine that will stop.

Seriously my favorite song at the moment. It’s calm, engaging, and interesting. Naturally, Self Machine is produced by Klas Åhlund who might just be a musical genius. He is also responsible for many songs by Robyn and The Teddybears.

From the beat of the silent thinker to the feet of the stomping crowd. Just another early drinker, who knows that thinkin’ makes the world go ’round.

PS: Did you know she is Sting’s daughter?

I had the pleasure of going to the lovely Marina & The Diamond’s show and briefly meeting her in Philadelphia a few nights ago. What a nice way to end the summer.
